Surprise! That is the word that will surely come to mind most often on this stage. For just such a surprise awaits around many a bend along the path. It might be an ancient hermitage that is still in use today, or the Gasthof Rummler, which offered weary pack-animal drivers a place to rest centuries ago. Then there are the "Diebsöfen"—rock caves once used as hideouts by bandits needing to lie low after ambushing traveling merchants. And, of course, there are the scenic highlights, such as the Schleierwasserfall (Veil Waterfall) and its famous climbing area; if conditions are right, you can watch some of Austria’s top climbers tackling the spectacular rock overhangs. Last but not least, there are the views looking back at the rugged rocky peaks on the southern side of the Wilder Kaiser.
