Eagle Walk - 1st Stage
The Eagle Walk route, which proceeds across the entire state, starts in St. Johann in Tirol!
Are you looking for a special hiking adventure? On the Eagle Walk you get to hike on the wings of an eagle. The route, which proceeds through the entire state, symbolises a proud eagle, spreading its ‘wings’ across the state of Tirol. The route starts in St. Johann in Tirol and proceeds across the Karwendel mountains to St. Anton am Arlberg and into Lechtal. 320 kilometres of hiking between the Wilder Kaiser and the Arlberg, 24 day stages ranging from easy to difficult, from gentle to brisk, from cheery to exhausting. 23,000 metres ascent, 20,000 metres descent.
The East Tirol Eagle Walk is shorter, but just as fantastic and challenging: nine stages between the Venediger and the Großglockner, 93 kilometres in length, ca. 8000 meters ascent and almost as much descent. Countless steps, hundreds of summits, thousands of superb views!
From relaxed leisure hiker to experienced Alpinists, everyone find terrain to suit them on the Eagle Walk. Step by step hikers find out more about the history of the state, about its traditions, artisan crafts and about the Tirol people. The regal start of the Eagle walk proceeds from the Rummlerhof in St. Johann in Tirol to Gaudeamushütte - ca. 5 hours walking time.

The Eagle Walk features paths that are, according to official classifications, categorised as hiking paths and mountain trails that are red level. More difficult stages can be avoided by taking easier detours (these are not marked in the map).
This means that other stages of the main route will be bypassed too. This includes the stage from Steinberg am Rofan via the Schafsteig saddle to Erfurter Hütte (U7), the ‘King’ Stage from Karwendelhaus to Birkkarspitze, continuing to Hallerangerhaus and to the Hallerangeralm (U11), as well as the stage from Stuttgarter Hütte via the Trittscharte to Ulmer Hütte (U22). For those who have an interest in culture, the Eagle Walk provides a special tour of the town (12a), where you hike and enjoy Tirol’s cultural assets. Those who don’t come across any eagles while on their hike, can make up for this at the Alpine zoo, where a Golden Eagle couple - ‘Donna & Max’ keep watch over their eyrie (Stage 12).
