Event information

Uta Karl-Mazzei is born 90 years ago in Kitzbühel into a middle-class and well-off family. Early on, sparked by her father's Karl May collection, she develops an immense longing for distant places.

In her twenties, she meets a certain Harald Lechenperg at a party while aspiring to be a flight attendant. He is having a conversation with Herbert Tichy about his travels to the most remote regions of the world, and she seizes the opportunity and joins this man who is almost 30 years her senior with great conviction.

For 16 years, the two travel together as a couple in the 60s and 70s to Afghanistan, India, Baluchistan, Pakistan, Burma, and many other countries, driving through the icy heights of the Pamir and the blazing hell of deserts—all in an old VW bus.

She, as a red-haired bombshell, the only woman for miles around in cultures that were then unimaginably closed off.

The adventures and cultural insights they experienced there find their way into a series of documentary films that, among others, are commissioned and broadcasted by ZDF and BR under the name "Journey to the End of the World."

After separating from Lechenperg, Uta finds a new home on the island of Elba and a new love with Roberto Mazzei, the last charcoal burner of the island, who stays with her until his death 10 years ago. She spends her life to this day in the summer months on the island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, and in winter she lives in her charming, ancient farmhouse in Schlederlechen, high above Mittersill in her "House Above the Clouds."
