Equipped with a backpack, a stick, and a warm jacket, he repeatedly ventures deep into the silence of the forest, to a very special place: a fir tree that has become his hiding place. Beneath its branches, the old man seems to merge with nature. He has spent over eight hundred nights there, listening, observing – always in search of foxes, deer, stags, lynxes, and the mysterious king of the woods: the capercaillie.

His son Vincent has shared his father’s fascination since he was twelve years old. From him, he has learned to read the tracks of animals, knows the places where they feed, where they hunt, build their nests, and sleep. Together with Vincent's son Simon, the family trio embarks on a journey into the breathtaking beauty of nature.
