Historical facts about Itter

The village of Itter has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. Itter was an important trading town and once belonged to the Duchy of Bavaria.
Itter is also known for Itter Castle, which served as a prison during the Second World War and was the scene of a famous liberation attempt. Itter Castle was first mentioned in 1255. It was repeatedly rebuilt and extended over the centuries and served as a residence for various noble families. During the Second World War, the castle was used as a prison for prominent French prisoners of war.
On 5 May 1945, shortly before the end of the war, American troops and German resistance fighters attempted to liberate the castle. The liberation attempt was successful and the prisoners were freed without any major fighting. After the war, Itter Castle was acquired by the Austrian state. Today the castle is privately owned.
