Vahid, an Azerbaijani auto mechanic, was once imprisoned by the Iranian regime and repeatedly interrogated there with his eyes blindfolded. One day, a man named Eghbal enters his workshop. The squeaking of his prosthetic leg makes Vahid believe he recognizes one of his former tormentors in Eghbal.
The Iranian master director Jafar Panahi, winner of the Golden Bear (Taxi Tehran), the Golden Lion (The Circle), was awarded the Palme d'Or for Best Film at Cannes 2025 for A SIMPLE ACCIDENT. Despite his long-standing professional ban, Jafar Panahi has once again succeeded in creating a film where humor and seriousness tell a story about present-day Iran and about those who dare to resist. His win of the Palme d'Or is not just an artistic triumph but also a significant victory for freedom of speech and expression. Panahi has also incorporated his own experience of imprisonment into this film. On the same day he was awarded three Gotham Awards, his lawyer announced that he had been sentenced in absentia in Iran to another year in prison for "propaganda against the state."
