Biathlon and Cross Country Skiing all over the mighty 'Koasa'
With their 1000 kilometres of pistes the Kitzbühel Alps are counted among the 'Alpine Stars of Austria'. Yet for decades the Nordic athletes have been leaving their tracks here too. Meanwhile Hochfilzen in the Pillersee Valley has even risen to its station of Biathlon World Cup Metropolis. In the reliably snow-covered village 960m up the mountain, the 21st Biathlon World Cup will be staged at the beginning of December (05/12–08/12/13), followed by the IBU Biathlon World Championship in 2017. St. Ulrich am Pillersee has been 'nominated' to host the FIS Continental Cup for Cross Country Skiing (13–15/12/13) and the Masters World Cup Cross Country Skiing 2014 (23/01–01/02/14), as well as the Trans-Pillersee Sledge Dog Camp (08–23/02/14). And one of the biggest ski marathons in Europe is being held in St. Johann in Tirol: the international Koasa Marathon (08–09/02/14), enticing around 2000 participants year after year from as many as 23 countries. 'Koasa' is the name given to the distinctive massif of the Wild Kaiser by the locals. Cross country skiing and biathlon in the Kitzbühel Alps attract even amateur athletes: as of this winter, the new cross country ski school Fit & Fun in the Koasa Stadium in St. Johann in Tirol will put anyone new to the cross country trails on the right track. As well as classic style and the skate skiing techniques, enthusiasts can also try out biathlon with a laser weapon. Furthermore, a preparatory camp for the Koasa Marathon is being organised. If anyone wants to feel like Ricco Groß or Ole Einar Bjørndalen one day, you'll actually get the opportunity to in Pillersee Valley or Erpfendorf as part of the weekly events programmes. Air rifle shooting is also offered in Westendorf and Waidring. And alongside Westendorf, Angerberg and St. Ulrich am Pillersee have also added cross country skiing tasters to their free winter programme. The Kitzbühel Alps offer 625 km of groomed cross country ski trails in total, to include four high-altitude trails and three night-time trails. The trail on the Penningberg in Hopfgarten has now been extended to include a new skating trail.
