Tour information

The start of this demanding tour is the hiking turntable at the tourist info centre in Hopfgarten. From there, follow the sign towards Markbachjoch (trail n°73). At first, the trail runs along the Brixental federal road for approx. 150m in the direction of the village centre. Opposite the Raiffeisen bank turn left into the Lukasfeld and walk through the railway underpass and cross the bridge over the Brixentaler Ache river. From there, trail n°73 leads uphill through the Schönbachtal valley to the sunny plateau of Hopfgarten, the Penningberg. After Penningdörft the trail gets steeper and takes you past remote farms and the Mittermoosen reservoir to the summit of the Markbachjoch (1500m) which you reach from Hopfgarten in approx. 2,5 hours. From up there you already have a wonderful view of the Hohe Salve and the surrounding peaks. The tour continues in western direction on trail n°74,  taking you past the Holzalm, where for centuries mountain cheese and other dairy products have been produced by hand, until the chapel by the Horler Stiegl. From there you’ll walk up to the Feldalphorn (1923m) in about 1,5 hours. Make a break there, catch your breath and prepare yourself for the descent which leads on trail n°74 in north-eastern direction via a mountain path to the Trockenbachalm. From there, a forest road leads on to the Haag Alm and on, through the forest downhill to Innterpenningberg. Once there, follow the asphalt road out of the valley and past the Hotel Gasthof Leamwirt to the junction 'Schlafhamer Hals'. Turn right there and follow the sign towards Hopfgarten. Via a forest road and then along the river you get back to where you started.
