Historical facts from Wörgl

The town of Wörgl has a long history dating back to the 12th century. It was an important trading town and a hub for railway traffic. During the Second World War, Wörgl was an important base for the German army and fierce fighting took place. On 13 February 1945, the town was bombed by Allied forces. The bombing destroyed large parts of the town and claimed many lives. After the war, Wörgl was rebuilt and is now a modern town with many shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. The town is also an important transport hub for the region, with a motorway junction and a main railway station served by many trains.

Wörgl is also known for Freigeld, an experiment introduced in the 1930s by the Austrian social reformer Silvio Gesell and the then mayor Michael Unterguggenberger. Freigeld was a type of currency that had an expiry date and had to be renewed regularly. This was meant to boost the economy by forcing people to spend their money quickly instead of hoarding it. The free money experiment was a success and led to an economic boom in Wörgl and the surrounding area. However, it was soon banned by the Austrian government as it was seen as a threat to the national currency.

"Freigeld" from Wörgl

Wörgler Freigeld
The town of Wörgl is the birthplace of Freigeld! Freigeld was an alternative currency introduced in Wörgl in the 1930s, during the Great Depression, by the then mayor Michael Unterguggenberger. The idea was simple: the municipality issued Free money notes, which were accepted as a means of payment in the region. The notes had a stamp on them that reduced a small amount month by month, so that people were motivated to spend the money quickly and thus boost the local economy.

Unterguggenberger was convinced that an alternative currency like Freigeld could help boost the local economy and reduce unemployment. With this idea, he turned to the well-known economist Silvio Gesell, who had developed the concept of free money.
The municipality issued free money notes worth 50,000 shillings and ensured that they were accepted as a means of payment in the region.
The Freigeld was a great success. In the first months after its introduction, demand for labour increased, the economy flourished and unemployment fell. However, the experiment was banned by the authorities soon after.

Visit Wörgl and learn more about Freigeld and its impact on the Hohe Salve region. Discover the historical buildings and places associated with Freigeld. Despite the ban, Freigeld has become a symbol of the innovative power of Wörgl and the Hohe Salve region. Today, the town of Wörgl commemorates the Freigeld experiment with a memorial stone, honouring Michael Unterguggenberger's commitment and the importance of innovation and progress for the local economy and community.

In addition, 2018 saw the release of "Das Wunder von Wörgl", an Austrian documentary film. The film was produced by director and producer Eva Eckert and received positive reviews for its well-researched and captivating portrayal of the story of Wörgl's free money experiment. In 2018, "Das Wunder von Wörgl" was screened at the Innsbruck International Film Festival in Austria and in 2019 at the Green Screen International Wildlife Film Festival in Germany.
