Tour information

The tour starts at the mountain station of the Salvistabahn gondola lift Itter, on the Kleine Salve. From there we follow the sign towards Rigi (trail n° 68) and come past the picturesque Kleine Salve reservoir. We first walk downhill on a narrow forest path before we reach the alpine inn Alpengasthof Rigi via a forest road.
From there we continue on path n°71 towards the Salvensee reservoir which we reach after approx.. 20-25 minutes. The second small lake along the route also offers a dream setting for mountain and nature lovers. With such a view and the fresh mountain air it is easy to gather reserves for the upcoming steep ascent to the Hohe Salve.

Along hiking trail n°90 we walk from the Salvensee to the summit. Via several hairpin bends, the well-maintained hiking trail winds its way along the south flank to the striking summit structure. Having reached the top we are rewarded with – as many consider – the most beautiful view in Austria. The view stretches from the Wilder Kaiser over the snow-covered peaks of the Hohe Tauern and Zillertal Alps up to almost all mountains of the Kitzbühel Alos.

Hungry and thirsty? No problem! The Gipfelrestaurant Hohe Salve is a wonderful place to have a break. And a detour to Austria’s highest pilgrimage church is definitely worthwhile.

Well-fortified we now walk along the west side of the mountain on trail n°65 downhill to the inn Gasthof Rigi. From there we follow the sign towards Kraftalm (trail n° 65 and 70) which we reach via a perfectly constructed forest road after a hike of approx. 2,5 hours.

Apart from culinary delights there is also the possibility to stay overnight. Who has not booked a room can comfortably float back to the valley with the gondola lift.
