Winter walk to Kurzer Grund

Winter walk to Kurzer Grund

This winter walk along the “Kurzer Grund” river leads into the same-named head of the valley and takes us past many snow-covered farmsteads and alpine pastures to the rustic mountain inn Gasthof Wegscheid at 1.144 m above sea level. The head of the valley is the starting point for numerous ski tours in the popular ski touring area surrounding the Neue Bamberger Hütte – in case you might want to set off on a tour to higher heights next time.

Eagle Walk Stage 10: Falken Hut - Karwendelhaus Lodge

Eagle Walk Stage 10: Falken Hut - Karwendelhaus Lodge

You may have already dreamed of summiting more peaks during your night on Falken Hut, on foot of prominent Laliderer Wände, however, you will start your day ambling down through rolling Alpine meadows. Beyond Ladizalm Alpine Pasture Hut, a dirt road winds down through thinning forest to Kleiner Ahornboden. It is a “smaller cousin” to the nearby fabled Großer Ahornboden and offers many of the same payoffs – including old growth sycamore maples – but is less crowded. Take some time to contemplate the serenity of nature, but, as you are here for mountaineering, your feet will quickly get used to climbing uphill again as you head northward into Lower Filztal Valley. From there, a short climb, gaining 400 metres in elevation, takes you up to Karwendelhaus Lodge.

Eagle Walk Stage 22: Memminger Hütte - Ansbacher Hütte

Eagle Walk Stage 22: Memminger Hütte - Ansbacher Hütte

Gullies resemble large ditches, small valleys or narrow chasms, incised into the rock by the cascading waters of thundering creeks and brooks. On this walk, you’ll encounter lots of them, along with notches, crests, ridges, steep flanks and scree slopes that will keep your pace in check. The rewards are great--outstanding views, clean air, and relatively few people to share the trail with--but be prepared to work for every view you get. Make your way down into Parseiertal Valley on steep and exposed tussock slopes, before climbing up to Langkar Cirque and Grießlscharte Notch. Beyond Winterjöchl Col, the trail passes behind Stierkopf Mountain, and resumes its climb up Kopfscharte Notch across rugged terrain. From the notch, head south towards Ansbacher Hut on wide open tussock slopes, drinking fine views and savouring precious Alpine moments on your way.

Eagle Walk Stage 05: Gasthof Schlossblick - Pinegg

Eagle Walk Stage 05: Gasthof Schlossblick - Pinegg

This walk is largely for those interested in heading up, steeply. The grade will keep you busy as you follow trails up, up, up. However, it more than makes up for the efforts with superior views; views to knock off your sweaty socks. Hike from lush pastures into remote Alpine terrain in the Rofan Mountains. Plessenberg Mountain, also called “Blessinger” by the locals, is part of the “triple star” Kienberg, Plessenberg and Heuberg Peaks, which are located in close proximity to one another. Once you have surmounted this peak and the easier Kienberg Peak, an area with the tempting name “Einkehrboden” – retreat area – awaits. However, for a bite to eat and an overnight stay, you will have to wait until you get to Pinegg, the destination of this segment – at Gwercherwirt Inn if you can. Pinegg is a part of Brandenberg – an idyllic holiday resort on a sunny upland plateau.

Eagle Walk Stage 04: Kufstein - Gasthof Schlossblick

Eagle Walk Stage 04: Kufstein - Gasthof Schlossblick

When leaving the charming historic small town behind, you might still be able to hear the sound of the “Heroes’ Organ” with its 4,948 perfectly tuned pipes – the world’s largest outdoor organ. First, take the train to Unterlangkampfen where the trail starts right above the church. Follow a steady climb through old-growth forest to gain elevation once again. Then take on a narrow path from Höhlensteinhaus Lodge to Köglhörndl, where you will enjoy magnificent views of Inntal Valley. The path continues to Hundsalmjoch Col at 1,637 metres altitude. Close to Alpengasthof Buchacker (unwardened mountain hut) you will find Hundalm Ice Cave, at an elevation of 1,520 metres. Descend to the underground world directly from the top of the mountain. Almost like Plato’s allegory of the cave!
