KAT Walk Stage 1: Combining tradition
From the Hopfgarten Tourist office in the centre of the village and at Intersport Oberhauser, you go down to the left to the underpass. Head down under the railway and continue to go over the bridge. Now go right for a short section along the street and at the yellow sign to Penningdörfl, 1h, go left through a field. The route will lead you into a forest.
At Blaickenhof (670m), head right on the forest path until you cross the bridge over the stream in Schönbachtal valley (a short downhill section). Now walk around 100 metres along the road, continuing to follow the signs to Penningdörfl along a cart path that leads through the Schönbachtal valley. As soon as you reach the first meadows, the route leads through fields and straight up to the oldest farms in the hamlet of Hinterlitzl (765m). Continue onto a forest route that gently ascends around 500 metres, before more or less evening out at Penningdörfl (1 hour from Hopfgarten). Go past the old wooden houses, and follow signs to Markbachjoch and Feldalphorn, heading up a forest route a little, before a steep path (marked Markbachjoch, Feldalphorn) branches off before a detached house and leads to the hamlet of Schipfling (985m).
As soon as you reach the access road (Mittermoosenweg), go left along this downhill road for around 800 metres to the Innerpenningbergstraße. Now go right, into the valley, heading around two kilometres along the little used road, with the last section being slightly downhill to Innerpenningberg (921m, approximately 1h 30min from Penningdörfl). Go over the bridge here, and follow the signs to Haagalm. A forest route leads constantly uphill over several bends, through the forest and pasture terrain, to the rustic Haagalm (1,320m, approx. 1h from Innerpenningberg).
After stopping off here, you are just a short uphill section away from the highest point of the stage (1,338m). The route now continues to slope down slightly to the Höhenbrandalm (1,299m). Lots of turns will take you along the forest route through the small ski area, with the last section being asphalted, as you head down to Kelchsau (around 1h 30min from Haagalm).
