Peru in the 1930s: While fascism spreads in Europe, young Maria Reiche from Dresden earns her living as a mathematics teacher in the capital, Lima. However, her true calling awaits further south of the cosmopolitan metropolis, in the Nazca desert. The French archaeologist Paul persuades Maria to translate some documents for him, hoping to find clues about an ancient canal system in the area. Instead, they uncover one of the greatest mysteries in human history amidst the dusty solitude: gigantic lines and figures, etched in the sand with mathematical precision, that immediately captivate Maria. Almost obsessed with unraveling the secrets of the geoglyphs, she is ready to leave behind her previous life, her love, and her teaching career. Alone and undeterred, Maria dedicates herself to the research and preservation of the Nazca lines... even against the resistance of the powerful in Peru.
