Fall Hiking Weeks IV: Unique Places & Tirolean Popular Piety
From the tourist office we walk to the hamlet of Bärnstetten, where we take the Stations of the Cross Trail to the Blood of Mary Hermitage. From there we continue through a mixed forest up to Gmail chapel, at 900 meters - the highest point of our hike. The high baroque chapel was built into a rock cave in 1782. We then walk down to Lourdes Grotto. Many years ago a St. Johann local who had been healed in Lourdes placed a statue of the Virgin Mary in a rock shelter here as a sign of his gratitude. We continue via Astaueralm to Gasteig, where we visit the Wilder Käser creamery. The hikers’ shuttle will take us back to St. Johann in Tirol.
