Nice and gentle winter in the deep snow, on sledges and in lodges

With over 1000 km of ski pistes, the Kitzbühel Alps are in peak condition as far as skiing and snowboarding are concerned. At the same time, the legendary Tyrolean mountains have become something of a paradise for cross country skiers, biathletes and ski tourers. Aside from the pistes, there are exquisite moments to be had if you're going for a winter hike, with or without snowshoes.

There are almost 450 km of cleared winter hiking trails leading you through snowy woodlands, into little hamlets and into cosy little rustic eateries. By taking guided tours offered by all the localities in the four holiday regions, visitors can get acquainted with the top-secret spots. To give you some real insider tips, we would point you to the lovely Windau Valley in Westendorf, the village of Kelchsau in Hopfgarten, the idyllic Lake Pillersee in St. Ulrich, the Kaiserbachtal wildlife preservation area in Kirchdorf or the landscape conservation area in Kirchberg.

In a few of the holiday resorts, torchlight tours can provide an extra helping of winter romance, maybe along the Lake Pillersee or in the little village of Brixen im Thale.

In the Kitzbühel Alps, tobogganers can practise day and night to get their curves just right. There are nine toboggan runs in the Kitzbühel Alps, five of which are lit up of an evening. As popular 'transporters' go, both the 3.5 km long natural toboggan run on the Gaisberg with the four-seater chairlift and the 'Rosenegg Hauler' in Fieberbrunn are real forerunners. There's also a 7 km long ski and toboggan run for experienced tobogganists in Oberwindau. And if you don't fancy the effort of getting to the start, in Westendorf there's the Alpenrosen gondola. Brixen im Thale organises a snowshoe hike to the Brixenbach Lodge with a spot of tobogganing afterwards.

In every corner of the Kitzbühel Alps, the days draw to a leisurely close in the comfort of the mountain cabins. Romantics can venture into the natural surroundings in a horse-drawn sleigh and drop in at one of the rustic lodges: try the Tyrolean Gröstl (seasoned pan-fried meat and potatoes) in Westendorf, find a Kasspatzl (cheesy pasta) party in Kirchberg or a ribs jamboree in Waidring.
