Challenging hike or adventure near the valley?
The decision is yours, because there are many highlights to explore in the Pillerseetal valley. Whether nature, top athletic performance, roller coaster, stand-up paddling, the world's highest walk-in summit cross or an escape room: There is something for everyone! What does your explorer's heart beat for?
Stoabock route: for sporty families and children in good physical condition with endurance (can be partially shortened with the mountain railway as an option)
Oachkatzl route: minimal walking distance, maximum fun – with use of the mountain railway for leisurely hiking days
Caution! Today the Stoabock route must be mastered without any shortcuts by mountain railway (19 km – 1,000 hm uphill – 800 m downhill – 7.5 hours)!
From the centre of St. Johann in Tirol your tour will set off past the front of the beautiful, baroque church towards the hamlet Oberhofen. After arriving at Wieshoferbrücke – shortly after the statue of St. Nepomuk – you'll turn right into a side street in order to get to Achendamm. From there, take the first turn left to the farmer's hamlet of Oberhofen, where you can admire the mighty and traditional Tyrolean farmhouses.
From now on, follow the signs towards Kalkstein. You will pass a trotting track and then come to the highest hamlet of St. Johann in Tirol. At the hamlet of Scheffau, turn right at a barrier onto a forest path towards Kalkstein, Adlerspoint. Continue uphill in several curves until the path dips into the forest.
After two more curves you will reach a junction where you'll turn left onto the steep path towards Adlerspoint. Climb the ridge further upwards, along the red and white ground markings, to the saddle below Baumooskogel. At the junction to Baumooskogel, turn right and follow the path downhill to Baumoosalm.
From the Alp, the trail leads downhill, then uphill again to Bruggwirtsalm. Always follow the signs to Adlerspoint – you will pass through alpine pastures to reach the former mountain inn. Wow – you've been on the road for about four hours now! What an amazing achievement!
Continue a short distance on the forest path until you can turn left towards Kirchberg onto a steep trail. After leaving the pine forest you will reach the highest point of today's hike in the middle of the beautiful alpine landscape – great job!
From now on, the path leads slightly downhill until it soon turns into a meadow path and runs down to Gerstbergalm. Behind the Alp you'll march straight ahead through the small valley towards restaurant Winterstelleralm. Here, you can take a rest and strengthen yourself properly with a Tyrolean delicacy for the last third of the hike!
After Winterstelleralm, follow the signs downhill towards Lindtalalm / St. Ulrich. At Lindtalalm, turn left in the right-hand bend towards Latschenbad / St. Ulrich, then take the path across the mountain slope, first slightly uphill and then down towards St. Ulrich am Pillersee.
The hiking trail joins an old forest road, that followed by a paved street that leads towards the MACK Latschenölbrennerei (pine oil distillery). Visiting the world's oldest pine oil distillery is an exciting experience and will teach you a lot about this valuable natural product!
Afterwards, walk left along the street for approx. 100 m before turning right onto a meadow path towards the centre of St. Ulrich am Pillersee. Passing the church, you will reach the village centre and in front of the Raiffeisen bank St. Ulrich am Pillersee you will arrive at the final destination of the KAT Walk. Wow – you have now officially conquered the Kitzbüheler Alpen Trail!
Oachkatzl route (trail Besinnungsweg from Fieberbrunn to St. Jakob: 2.5 km – 90 m uphill – 45 min):
Since there is no mountain railway for you squirrels on the regular route today, this time you'll hike a little off the KAT Walk.
Take the train from St. Johann in Tirol to Fieberbrunn (free of charge with the Kitzbüheler Alpen guest card). From the train station you'll hike over the hamlets Torfmoos and Sanhütten to the Besinnungsweg (Path Of Reflection). Follow it to the centre of St. Jakob in Haus to reach the Familienland amusement park. Roller coasters, carousels, petting zoos and much more await you here! (Of course you can also just take the bus from Fieberbrunn to St. Jakob.)
A trip with Buchensteinwand cable car in St. Jakob is a great experience as well, because at the summit you'll find Jakobskreuz (Jacob's Cross), the tallest walk-in summit cross in the world!
Or would any of you fancy stand-up paddling, arrow battles, a marble course and more? All of this can be tried out at SUP’n’FUN in St. Ulrich at the beautiful lake Pillersee! Directly opposite there's the Forellenranch (Trout Ranch) with a fishing pond as a further fun thing to do in the adventurous Pillerseetal. To get to St. Ulrich, simply take the bus from Fieberbrunn.
In addition, the king of Steinberg is up to mischief in the Pillerseetal. Can you defeat him by solving his puzzles? The puzzle stations are hidden throughout the Pillerseetal and are waiting for you brave explorers!
A walk around the glittering Pillersee or one of the many family hikes are also a great experience. What are you most looking forward to?
