Pilgrimage church Mariastein in Tyrol

15 km north-west of the Hohe Salve, at 575 m above sea level, one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in the country is hidden away: Mariastein.
Wallfahrtskirche Mariastein

Impressively perched on a 14 m high rock lies the pilgrimage church (built around 1360), which has been a popular pilgrimage site since the late Middle Ages. The 42 m high tower can be reached via 150 steps. The lovely pilgrimage church in Mariastein, in addition to many exhibits in the castle museum, the coffered ceiling in the Princes' Hall, the sacred items of gold and silver, the pilgrimage icons, the musical instruments and the door knockers symbolising the right for asylum, offers two more extraordinary gems to marvel at: the "Tyrolean state insigina" with the archducal hat and sceptre, donated by Sovereign Maximilian (known as the "Deutschmeister", around 1600).

"You can pray well in Mariastein", says Pastor Matthias Oberascher. He has been the pilgrimage pastor in Mariastein since 1999 and is no doubt right, because Holy Mass has been celebrated for 640 years in the well-fortified walls of the pilgrimage church. More info
