Detailed description of the trail

Mountains, farmhouses and tales: Hopfgarten - Kelchsau

From the "Hopfgarten Berglift" train station, walk a few metres on a path alongside the railway tracks in the direction of Wörgl. Follow the stairs down to the underpass, turning left immediately under the railway, then straight ahead over the bridge. Walk a short stretch along the road and at the yellow direction signpost for "Penningdörfl, 1h, 73" turn left across a field. The trail then leads into the forest.

At the Blaickenhof Farm (670m) turn right along the forest path continuing to the bridge and crossing over the "Schönbachtals" stream ( a short downhill passage). Now turn left and walk about 100m along the road following the signs for "Pennningdörfl" on a dirt road uphill through the Schönbachtal Valley.

On arrival at the first meadow, the trail leads across fields directly to the old heritage farms of Hinterlitzl's hamlet (765m). Continue along the forest path about 500 m slightly uphill, later on evening out into Penningdörfl (1h from Hopfgarten). Pass the old wooden houses, keep to the signs for "Markbachjoch, Feldalphorn" and walk along a short forest path, uphill, to just before a detached house ("Markbachjoch, Feldalphorn") where the path branches off and leads directly to the Schipfling hamlet (985m).

As soon as you reach the access road (Mittermoosenweg), turn left about 800m downhill as far as the "Innerpenningberg" road. Now turn right into the valley along the quiet road approximately 2 km, the last part of which is slightly downhill, to the "Innerpenningberg" (921m, ca. 1 ½h from Penningdörfl / village). Cross over the bridge here and follow the signs for "Haagalm".

A forest path with several bends and a steady ascent takes you through forest and Alpine pastures to the quaint "Haagalm" (1,320m, ca. 1h from the Innerpenningberg). After refreshments, a short distance uphill takes you to the highest point of the tour (1,338m) and then continue downwards to the unmanaged "Höhenbrandalm Farm" (1,299m). Now, in a series of bends along the forest path, through the small ski resort, the last piece with an asphalt surface, walk downhill to Kelchsau (about 1 ½ h from the "Haagalm").

View points

The highlight of the day's stage

Just above the hamlet "Hinterlitzl", there is a beautiful view of the Brixen Valley and of the Hohe Salve.
Also from the hamlet "Schipfling" there is a super view where you can see as far as the Kitzbühel Horn.
The Hohe Salve can be seen from the "Haagalm" as well as the Wilder Kaiser behind it. Looking a little to the right, the Lodron summit (the highest point of the next stage) can be seen and even as far at the "Kurzen Grund" at the end of which is the crossover to the Salzburg Pinzgau region.

Food & Beverage opportunities

This inn is located on the Penningberg, slightly off-route, approximately 500 m from Penning village in the direction of Hopfgarten.

This cosy, little hut is open at the weekends (from Friday afternoon) during the Summer. Typical mountain dishes such as Tyrolean Grey Cheese or a smoked bacon (speck) platter are available. Highly recommended is the "Prügel" cake, a regional speciality.
