One of Ausria’s most amazing high alpine roads
Also cyclists love the Zillertal high alpine road!
It is a popular destination as well as a challenge. Not less impressive is the panoramic view which awaits visitors along the course of the road above the forest boundary reaching from the Inn Valley to the snow-covered peaks of the glaciers of the Zillertal Alps. We recommend you to set off this tour early in the morning since especially on sunny summer days the narrow road gets quickly crowded with cars and motorbikes on their outings.
Start the tour at the parish church in Wörgl and go on along the federal road to Kundl and further on to Rattenberg. Go down to the banks of the river Inn there and take the Inn cycle path past the smallest town of Austria. At the roundabout take the third exit to Brixlegg. At the next roundabout take the second exit to Reith im Alpbachtal. Now cycle uphill until the junction Hygna. From there a narrow mountain road (gradient 12%) leads via Reither Kogel mountain to Kerschbaumsattel col. Downhill ride via Bruckerberg to Imming. Now follow the road into the valley, pass Hart and go on until Fügen. From here through Uderns to Ried. Now follow the signposting “Zillertaler Höhenstraße” and ride up the high alpine road via Riederberg to the toll booth and on to Zirmstadl (partly very steep with a gradient of up to 17%). Continue along the signposted road and , after a short descent, go on towards Hippach/ Zellberg at the junction and ride up and down past Hirschbichlalm to the highest point of the tour, Melchboden (2025m). The long downhill ride to the Zillertal valley starts right at the kiosk in Melchboden. Once in the valley, follow the road to Zell am Ziller, Aschau, Kaltenbach and Uderns until fügen. Change to the other side of the valley and ride via Hart and Bruck back to the Inn Valley. Now take the same route back to Rattenberg from where you take the Inn cycle path to get back to Wörgl.
