From the Hopfgarten information office, follow the signs 'KAT Walk Winter' in an easterly direction across the large parking area of the mountain railway. At its end, you cross under the railway line and then hike along the road to the wooden bridge. There you cross the river Brixentaler Ache and hike into the valley towards Kelchsau - always towards the sun.
After about 400 metres you will reach the Elsbethen bridge on the left. Cross this bridge as well and follow the signs on the trail of the KAT Walk Winter through the Elsbethen settlement. Attentive winter hikers catch glimpses of wonderful Alpine-style homes, tranquil farms and, of course, the Elsbethen church.
Leaving the Elsbethen church and settlement behind, the trail now heads uphill - high on the Gruberberg. The trail leads through the snow-covered winter forest on a leisurely incline to remote farms. Always in view is the Hohe Salve – one of Tyrol's most beautiful panoramic mountain.
At the highest point of the KAT Walk Winter, you have reached your destination and earned some refreshments that you brought with you.
For the way back, we recommend the same route.
Those who have acquired a taste for it and still have enough time can complete stage 1 of the KAT Walk Winter to Westendorf and from there return comfortably by bus or train to the starting point.
