Tour information

The Hacha round tour leads from the Hopfgarten information office via the romantic market town of  Hopfgarten out into nature.  To do this, walk from the information office along Schmalzgasse to the parish church. At the junction after the parish hall, turn right uphill and you will soon find yourself below the old people's home. Here you keep to the left road and thus reach the access road for the Hopfgarten district of Hacha. After a somewhat steeper climb, you reach the hamlet with its beautiful farms and small chapel. Continue straight on through the forest until you reach the sunny Itter plateau.
In the cold winter months, you are particularly close to the warming rays of the sun here. Past the wayside cross with a bench for resting, you walk across the sports field directly into the village centre of Itter. After the bend at the Dorfladl, turn into the Rosenweg and walk across the settlement “Itterer Bauerndörfl” back onto the main road. Cross the main road and walk past the outdoor swimming pool to the Schusterhof inn. There, parallel to the cross-country ski trail, a winter hiking trail leads across the snow-covered field back to the Lindweg, where you turn left and follow the trail back towards Hacha and Hopfgarten.
On this tour you will always catch a glimpse of the famous Itter Castle, which was first mentioned in a document in 1241. The castle gained historical fame especially at the end of the Second World War. The castle functioned as a prison for prominent prisoners of war, mainly from France. On 5 May 1945, two days before the end of the war, soldiers of the US Army and the Wehrmacht fought here side by side against units of the Waffen-SS for the only time in the history of war. Today, Itter Castle is privately owned and not open to the public.
