Tour information

The start of this demanding tour is the hiking turntable at the tourist info office in Hopfgarten.
From there follow the sign towards Markbachjoch (trail n°73) which at first leads on the Brixental road for approx. 150 metres towards the village centre. Opposite the Raiffeisen bank turn left into Lukasfeld and walk through the railway underpass. Cross the bridge over the Brixentaler Ache river. From there, trail n°73 leads you uphill through the Schönbachtal valley to the sunny plateau of Hopfgarten, the Penningberg. After Pennigdörfl the path gets steeper again, leading you past remote farms and the Mittermoosen reservoir to the summit of the Markbachjoch (1500m) which you reach from Hopfgarten in approx. 2,5 hours. From there you already have a fantastic view of the Hohe Salve and the surrounding mountain  peaks.
Continue in western direction on trail n°74 which takes you past Holzalm, where for centuries mountain cheese and other dairy products have been made by hand, to the chapel at the Horler Stiegl. From there you reach the Feldalphorn (1923m) in about 1,5 hours. Now walk in southern direction slightly downhill on trail n°75 over lush alpine pastures before the trail gets a bit steeper again, leading you to the highest point of the tour, the Schwaigberghorn (1990m). Now it’s time to take a deep breath and gather all your strength for the descent.
On you go past the Neustattalm and the Alpmessaualm, partly on mountain paths, partly on forest roads back down to the valley. After a total of approx. 9 hours of hiking, you finally reach the village of Kelchsau. Directly at the end of the tour there is a bus stop from where you can take public transport back to the start of the tour.
