Tour information

A visit to Tyrol’s only ice- and dripstone cave situated at the mountain pasture Hundalm is almost a must. Guided by experienced members of the cave exploration club, you get a fascinating insight into the secrets of the origin and the development of the earth. The route leads from the parking area at Gasthof Schlossblick by foot to the fork in the road near the gate. From there it continues northward along Adlerweg H4 towards “Buchacker Alm”, which is situated at an altitude of 1320 m. The route towards “Buchacker Ice Cave” continues leisurely on the marked trail via alpine meadows that are blooming in blue and fragrant like gentian, and then leads past the “Adlerhorst” ”(eagle’s nest”) observation platform with its wood carvings. A visit to the ice and dripstone cave is particularly advisable in the spring, when the cave displays the most bizarre ice forms. The Hundalm cave is the only cave with ice and dripstone formations in Northern Tyrol. Situated at an altitude of 1520 m it provides a temperature of around zero degrees even in the summer – that’s why you should wear warm clothing when you go there. In the cave nature has formed within million of years countless cave spaces (the highest of them measures 16 m). The deepest point of the cave lies 45 m below the surface. Of course you can choose the same way back to the valley but the very recommendable alternative leads via the Hundalm, the Köglhörndl and Hundalmjoch or via the Bärenbad towards Niederbreitenbach or Mariastein. this variation offers a superb view towards the west and east towards Großvenediger as wel as the Zilertaler and Tuxer Alps and the Hohe Tauern mountain range (Hiking time: 8 hours, route length: 19.2 km)
