Eagle Walk Stage 11: Karwendelhaus Lodge - Hallerangerhaus Lodge

Eagle Walk Stage 11: Karwendelhaus Lodge - Hallerangerhaus Lodge

Excelsior! On this walk, you will find yourself in a world almost as far removed as you can get from the forested valleys below. It's steep, brushy, challenging and technical. It’s a long journey at about 14 kilometres, and more than mere time is required for this trek; you'll also need excellent endurance and a good cardiovascular system. The trail climbs steeply from Karwendelhaus Lodge to the high ridgeline. Once aloft on those airy plains, you'll be in a true Alpine environment. The scramble route starts at Schlauchkar Cirque. Here, the trail becomes increasingly rock-laden, slowing your pace as you clamber up and around talus and scree slopes and you'll have to cross a snowfield. Beyond Birkkar Refuge, the final push to the summit of Birkkarspitze is an exposed scramble that contours along the western ridge of the mountain, assisted by a fixed anchoring system of cables. A knee-jarring descent takes you into lovely Hinterautal Valley, where you can catch your breath while ambling along a gently graded forest road. Parallel to the cascading Lafatscherbach Brook, the trail heads to Lafatscher Niederleger with its quaint Alpine Pasture Hut. Soon after, it branches off towards Hallerangerhaus Lodge and Alpine Pasture Hut, the destination end of what is often called the Eagle Walk's ‘hardest mile’.

Eagle Walk Stage 15: Solsteinhaus Lodge - Leutasch/Ahrn

From Solsteinhaus Lodge it’s steep climbs and rock scrambles north-westward towards Eppzirler Scharte Notch—the trail furiously works its way up to the notch that offers superb close-ups of Großer and Kleiner Solstein Peaks, the mighty western cornerstones of Nordkette Range. Beyond a scree cirque, a well-maintained trail switchbacks down and merges into lush Alpine meadows at an elevation of around 1,700 metres, taking you to charming Eppzirler Alm Alpine Pasture Hut with its tiny chapel. From there you begin your descent into Eppzirlertal Valley on a broad road that follows Gießenbach Brook across pristine Gießenbachklamm Ravine on a rugged trail. From Gießenbach the trail heads to Scharnitz, and across Hoher Sattel and through thinning forest to Leutasch/Ahrn.
