Eagle Walk Stage 10: Falken Hut - Karwendelhaus Lodge

Eagle Walk Stage 10: Falken Hut - Karwendelhaus Lodge

You may have already dreamed of summiting more peaks during your night on Falken Hut, on foot of prominent Laliderer Wände, however, you will start your day ambling down through rolling Alpine meadows. Beyond Ladizalm Alpine Pasture Hut, a dirt road winds down through thinning forest to Kleiner Ahornboden. It is a “smaller cousin” to the nearby fabled Großer Ahornboden and offers many of the same payoffs – including old growth sycamore maples – but is less crowded. Take some time to contemplate the serenity of nature, but, as you are here for mountaineering, your feet will quickly get used to climbing uphill again as you head northward into Lower Filztal Valley. From there, a short climb, gaining 400 metres in elevation, takes you up to Karwendelhaus Lodge.

Eagle Walk Stage 18: Lorea Hütte - Anhalter Hütte

Eagle Walk Stage 18: Lorea Hütte - Anhalter Hütte

The first section of the hike is fairly easy, gently ascending Alpine greenery before making an Achilles-aching ascent to Lorea Notch. Beyond, it’s a knee-jarring descent to Heimbach Valley, from where you will gain Schweinstein Col on your way to Tarrentonalm Alpine Pasture Hut. This is a perfect walk to show intrepid hikers the extraordinary places their feet can take them. However, you’ll need to turn your focus from the scenery to your feet as the steep descent from Hinterberg Col can be treacherous and slippery in rain; and you'll have to cross a few snowfields as snow may remain here well into August. Beyond Hinterberg Col and Krom Saddle, the tread winds down meadows and Alpine pastures to reach Anhalter Hütte Hut, located in a place that pays scenic dividends to tenacious trekkers. Call it a day and savour breathtaking views!

Plus a dream view of the surrounding mountains, the icy giants of the Hohe Tauern, and the imposing peak of the Großen Rettenstein, which feels within touching distance. The paths are mostly not all too difficult, with only the sections on either side of the Hintenkarscharte classified as moderately difficult. Eagle Walk Stage 08: Erfurter Hütte - Lamsenjochhütte

This day, the Eagle Walk starts gently: Take Rofan Gondola for an effortless and scenic downhill ride from Erfurter Hütte Hut to Maurach and enjoy magnificent views of emerald Lake Achensee. Walk along the southern and south-western lake shore to Pertisau, where you take the paved road into Falzthurntal Valley, bringing you to Falzthurn Inn and Sennhütte Hut. Then, continue along a gravel road to Gramaialm Alpine Pasture Hut and further on into the valley towards Lamsenjoch Hut. The steep grade will keep you warm as you follow narrow switchbacks up, up, up to reach this hut, which is also the destination of this segment. When you break out onto a col, catch your breath and call it a day: Lamsenjochhütte Hut is the perfect respite for those who have braved the character-building grade leading up to it.
