Brixen's Bergleuchten festival - the legendary Bergleuchten
24th August 2019 in Brixen im Thale
The legendary Bergleuchten festival ... Throughout Brixental the local associations place large symbols on the freshly mown, steep pastures. Around 40,000 torchlights is quite an undertaking. 'Bergleuchten' enchants locals and visitors every year, when the clubs from Brixental affix their symbols, emblems and logos to the freshly mown, 'natural canvases'. At 9:30 p.m. these works of art are lit and the valley and mountains are transformed into a flickering starry sky. The many fires are best experienced in a car; during the journey from Westendorf via Brixen to Kirchberg. Big party on the village square in Brixen with live music and a fantastic atmosphere throughout the evening; great food and drinks available.
'Brixentaler Bergleuchten' is one of Tirol's many mountain fire celebrations and is firmly anchored in the culture of the Kitzbüheler Alpen. The tradition dates back to pre-Christian times, when the pagan mountain inhabitants lit fires to invoke the power of the sun.
