Tour information

We drive out to the Windau valley. If you want to make this a round-trip as described, we suggest you park your car between the Pastau carpark and the Ahornau hunting hut so that on our return you don’t have so far to go to recover your car. From Ahornau a small foot-bridge assists us over the Windau Ache (river). We walk past the mountain pasture structures and reach a roadway. At the first turn right following the sign posts, we continue on the mountain trail to Lagfeldenalm. Hiking a somewhat steeper trail through the woods, after approx. 45 minutes we arrive at the beautiful, wide-spread mountain pastures of Lagfeldenalm (1,168m). Already at this point, you have a fantastic view of the Windau valley. Continuing onwards, not so steep, but progressively uphill, our route takes us past stoney fields and a dilapidated farm building to the summit of the Steinbergstein! An absolutely stunning panorama awaits you here!!! Accompanied by magnificent views we trek north-west along a gentle ridge to Lodron. Here at the peak you will find one of the most beautiful summit crosses in the region. Returning a short part of the trail we have just done, a signpost (which we have just passed on our way up to the summit) leads us to the left, downhill, first to the Oberkaralm and further on to the two Lärchenbergalms.  It is on the Lärchenbergalm that the dialect poet, Sepp Kahn spends the summer months and looks forward to a short visit where one way or another an anecdote will most certainly be revealed. To the left below the lower Lärchenbergalm the so-called “Sauwegl” trail begins. Following this trail we soon reach a forest road. We take this road until shortly after the Wallernalm. A signpost directs us to the right and leads us along a trail to the Steinberg Inn. Remaining on the forest road (thus cutting some corners) we arrive once again on the valley road alongside the Windau Ache. Finally, we trek back to our parked cars!
