Shred Down Rocks
Big open banked slalom
A highly challenging and watchable Banked Slalom course, more than 80 motivated participants from the smallest to the greats of Austrian snowboarding, as well as 20 years of Shred Down in the Boarders Playground were optimal conditions for the redesigned classic. Man of the day was undoubtably Zillertal pro Wolle Nyvelt with the day’s best time, ahead of Steve Gruber and Thomas Eberharter in the masters category. In particular the young talents also called attention to themselves, who displayed great enthusiast for snowboarding and got to pitch themselves against the pros. A thoroughly successful event on all levels with great potential for the future.
For 2 decades now, the Shred Down has featured as a cult event in the Austrian snowboarding scene. What began in 1998 with “Call of the Wild” has in recent years developed into the Austrian and German Slopestyle Championships. Freestyle-snowboarding is continuing on a path towards a high-performance sport, which puts very high requirements on athletes. Thus the requirements on the individual ski areas are also increasing, which can hardly cope with the rapid change of the freestyle sport for holding such events. Even though much has been done in Westendorf over the years to keep the funpark and to cater to the growing freestyle scene, it must still be stated that the project Boarders Playground as a venue for national and international Slopestyle-Championships has reached its limits, and has thus been given a new concept.
